Staff Christmas Offering

Of all the names ascribed to Jesus in Isaiah 9:6, perhaps the one that speaks to me the most this time of year is “Prince of Peace.”  We live in a time, like when Isaiah spoke these words to the nation of Israel, when peace is sorely missing and needed.  I just read a news article this week where our FBI Director testified before Congress recently that the risk of a terrorist attack against this country is higher now than it has been since pre-911.  He was quoted as saying, “Blinking lights are everywhere.”

In contrast to those “blinking lights,” there shines the light of Christ who came into the world more than 2,000 years ago, born in a stable in Bethlehem.  Israel was under Roman rule at that time and while there was a general sense of peace under Rome’s rule known as “Pax Roma,” for the nation of Israel, that peace was at the cost of their freedom.

As we celebrate the birth of Christ this Christmas season, may we find in the “Prince of Peace” our security and rest.  He offers a “peace that transcends understanding.” May His peace “which surpasses all understanding, guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 4:7)
