As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers,
Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake,
for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said,
“and I will send you out to fish for people.”
At once they left their nets and followed him.
Mathew 4:18-20 NIV

Welcome back!  I trust the Christmas break was a restful and refreshing break from the normal day to day routine of work and school, etc.  I know it was for my wife and me.  We spent a week with our oldest son and his family in Florida, followed by a week at home just relaxing and enjoying the time together. It’s nice to know that after two weeks of being with each other 24/7, we still like each other. :0)

As I have started the new year with another planned year of reading through the Bible, I am in Genesis and Matthew this month. I was again struck by the obedience of Christ’s disciples when He called them to “follow me.” When Christ called Peter and Andrew to follow Him, there was no debate or hesitation on their part.  Matthew records that, “At once they left their nets and followed Him.” They left their fishing nets (vocation) to follow Jesus, not knowing where He would lead them.

I wonder about us. Would we be willing to leave the comfort and familiarity of what we currently know and do in order to follow Christ without knowing where that would lead us?  Answering that question is both a one-time decision as well as a daily decision.  Every day when the alarm rings, we have a choice to follow Christ or not.  As we embark on a new year, may our hearts be inclined to follow Christ where He leads on a daily basis, without debate or hesitation.
