“So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”
Genesis 1:27

On Tuesday of this week, I had the privilege of traveling to Olivet Nazarene University to watch two of our students “pitch” their business ideas at an entrepreneurial event the university sponsors.  In all, four of our students were selected to present their ideas at the conference in the high school competition, but I could only watch two of them as they were presenting in different rooms at the same time. Mr. Jett (the class teacher) and two parents were also there to watch their students present. As a faith-based program, the students were challenged to consider how generating revenue from a business venture could be used to help fund Christian ministries, along with making a living for themselves.

This is an offshoot of our entrepreneurial class the school started offering this year. The goal of the class is to help our students begin to think creatively about possible business ideas that could someday be developed into an actual business if they choose.  One of our students who presented is already running a start-up business and generating revenue from it.  This was our first exposure to this competition and our students came back excited about doing this again next year.  Applying knowledge from what they have learned to solve real-world problems is exciting for our students and makes their education much more meaningful and purposeful.

Genesis states that we have been “created in the image of God.” A part of what I believe that means is that we were made to be creative.  Our students reflect the image of God when they exercise their creativity, whether in art, music, academics, athletics, or business opportunities. Congratulations to Michael Rosales, Carter Herrold, Aubrey Goodfellow, and Adeline Yoder for being selected to present at this year’s competition.  BTW, Adeline has started her own coffee shop “business” at VCA this quarter to help raise money for the Senior Class mission trip next year and it has already been a success. I enjoy my “French Press” black coffee that she brews for me every morning!
