K-8 Literacy Plan

(based on Indiana Essential Standards and Science of Reading)

(K-3)  By the end of 3rd grade, students will be able to ~

  • orally read grade-level text with accuracy, correct prosody, and expression. 

  • recognize letter/sound correlation, and decode isolated sounds and syllables within single and multi-syllabic words. 

  • show comprehension of grade-level text by asking and answering questions about the main idea, supporting details, and sequencing events while also utilizing text to support their understanding. 

  • write narrative, informative, and persuasive essays with an organized beginning, middle, and end, and use correct grammar. 

  • sort and define words with similar patterns, antonyms, synonyms, homophones, homographs, and multiple-meaning words.

(4th-5th) By the end of 5th grade, students will be able to ~

  • use the 6 major syllable patterns to read unknown grade-level words. (4th)

  • show knowledge of letter/sound correspondence, syllable patterns, and use morphology to accurately read unfamiliar multisyllabic words in context. (5th)

  • read grade-level text fluently with correct prosody, phrasing, and expression. 

  • show understanding of a variety of grade-level texts by drawing inferences, determine 2 or more main ideas in the text, determine the theme of a story, summarize the main events using evidence, and compare and contrast key elements. 

  • apply knowledge of word structure elements, known words, and word patterns (prefixes, suffixes, Greek and Latin morphology) to determine word meaning. 

  • write narrative, informative, and persuasive essays with an organized beginning, middle, and end, and use correct grammar.

(6th-8th) By the end of 8th grade, students will be able to ~

  • apply knowledge of word structure elements, known words, and word patterns (Greek and Latin morphology) to determine word meaning.

  • analyze what the text says explicitly as well as draw inferences through strong text evidence, compare/contrast the structure of 2 or more works of literature, determine author's perspective or purpose in a text, analyze the development of a theme and its relationship to characters, setting, and plot, and evaluate the author's claim and argument using relevant and sufficient evidence from the text. 

  • will write argumentative, informative, and narrative compositions with correct grammar and conventions. 

Current K-8 ELA Curriculum includes:

  • Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Write Bright Station, & UFLi

  • Remediation for reading proficiency is completed through our Response to Intervention process during the school day.  

  • Summer school is provided for students who are not proficient in reading.
